Best of the best, since 1997
The Carolina Competition began after the decline of the S.C.A.R.S. competition. McColl Rescue Squad — later McColl EMS, and in 2005 part of Marlboro County Rescue — had been a regular BLS entry there. In 1997 the squad set out to build something harder: a realistic advanced-life-support contest between North Carolina and South Carolina.
It started small. Only a few teams came the first year, most of them from less than an hour away. The event was presented for years by Marlboro County Rescue. Dr. Kevin A. Jasinski was its founder and chairman. Teams brought their own stocked ambulance, worked one at a time, and were sequestered so the scenario stayed a secret until the awards banquet.
It has been called the yardstick by which other EMS competitions are measured. Two years were cancelled and not counted: 2021, for COVID staffing, and 2024, for hurricane recovery. Since 2019 we have struggled to get enough teams entered to compete. 2026, which would have been the 28th, is cancelled as well.
